Description

Didier Gerbelle returned home to Valle d'Aosta to take over his family's vineyards after graduating from the Enological Institute of Alba. He is widely viewed as one of the rising stars of his region. We first encountered these wines at an inn in the village of Aymavilles where the owner enthusiastically recommended a bottle of Didier's Petit Rouge.

Didier's Petit Rouge comes from the 'Plan' vineyard in the commune of Villeneuve at 2,200 feet above sea level. The soil consists mostly of sand with stones, and contains little organic material or nutrients. The wine was aged for a year in 1000 liter oak barrels.

Petite Rouge is the main red grape variety of the Aosta valley and produces deeply colored wines with flowery aromatics. The cuisine of the Aosta Valley is based on cheese and meat, potatoes and rice. This Petite Rouge is marvelous when served with gnocchi sauced with butter, herbs and morels.
