Altare ages Larigi in new oak barriques, adding spice and sweet vanilla notes to Barbera’s bright cherry fruit. Altare began aging his Barbera in new French barrique after visiting Burgundy for the first time in 1976. The trip was a revelation, and when Elio got back home he grabbed a chainsaw and chopped up the big old wooden tanks in his family’s cellar.

The style at Altare is for intensely perfumed, elegant, and finessed Barberas and Nebbiolos, framed smartly in French oak. These are top-quality, serious Barberas not to be missed.

The 2008 Larigi has a very elegant nose layered with aromas of ripe berry, sweet spices, and toasted oak wood. Warm and soft on the palate, its flavor is intense, with velvety tannins and a very long and pleasant finish. From vines planted in 1948 and aged in 100% new oak barrels for 18 months, this is a collectable Barbera intended for long aging.
