Description

Philippe Bornard is a neighbor and long-time friend of Pierre Overnoy in the small town of Pupillin near Arbois. Bornard inherited his vineyard from his father, and decided to make wine himself in 2005. Bornard farms entirely without chemical inputs.

This is not Melon de Bourgogne but a local variant of Chardonnay that has mutated in this region. Melon-Queue-Rouge, to give it its full name, refers to the red stems of the vines. It is indeed so rare that the INAO does not officially recognize Melon's existence.

Bornard's Melon vines were planted in 1968 in the white Marne soils typical of Pupillin. There are mild oxidative notes (aged in 1000L demi-muids) with lots of lovely baked apple and blossom aromas and a hint of something tropical. A delicious white wine for whole roasted fish, seared sea scallops with a butter shallot sauce or pâté en croûte.
