Jo and Isabelle Pithon, with son and daughter-in-law Joseph and Wendy Paillé, are the force behind some of the most delicious Loire wines you will find anywhere. Pithon-Paillé is "négociant-éleveur," producing wines from its own vineyard as well as from fruit grown under contract.

The 2008 Pithon-Paillé Anjou Blanc La Fresnaye is from a 1.5 ha parcel in St Aubin de Luigné in front of an abandoned castle (Château Fresnaye) that the Pithons repurposed as a temporary home and cellar. The vines were planted in 1969. Gravelly soil with galets gives Chenin Blanc full of golden fruit and minerals.

The wine shows lovely aromas of cider apples, honeyed intensity, and a strong sensation of minerality. An intense core of crunchy fruit and high-toned acidity make for a very long and lingering finish. It's a superb pairing for boudin noir, roasted poultry, and butternut squash soup.
