Description Tasting Notes

How is it that we arrive at Rudi Pichler's sublime and mineral-intense Pinot Blanc every year and find ourselves scratching our heads in disbelief? This is Pinot Blanc? The varietal that is sometimes dismissed as a picnic wine becomes something very special in the hands of Rudi Pichler, Falstaff Magazine's 2010 Winemaker of the Year.

Two key elements are old vines and the Rudi's serious attitude about the varietal. Another element is that Pinot Blanc prefers deep, minerally soils with plenty of nutrients (Pichler's Kollmütz vineyard consists of Gföhler Gneis und Löss soils) and good sun exposure.

When yields are kept in check (Pichler keeps his yields are notoriously low), Pinot Blanc becomes a beautifully concentrated, full-bodied wine with deep minerality and an attractive almond scent. It's very powerful, and in a cool cellar, has tremendous aging potential.
