Description

Saint-Joseph is the second-largest appellation of the Northern Rhône. It overlaps with the southern part of Condrieu and runs some 37 miles down to Cornas and parallels the busy north-south corridor of the TGV and the Rhône River itself. This is industrial France, with the factories of Lyon and Valence humming nearby, and the clogged motorway of the A7 lying just below the vines.

Philippe Faury, who took over his family's vines in 1979, now works closely with his son Lionel. The Faurys now have 11 hectares from Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu, as well as some particularly good plots in St-Joseph.

This St-Joseph comes from granitic soils, which frame the delicious black fruit of this wine neatly. They also opt for around 30% stems (our preferred style for Syrah), which lends exotic complexity to the aroma. Aged in larger 600-liter demi-muids. Superb when paired with a tri-tip roast encrusted with black pepper and coffee.
