Ignaz Niedrist is a small, widely admired artisan producer in Alto Adige. His wines are very expressive, brilliantly made examples of their type, including a stunningly gorgeous Pinot Noir (known locally as Blauburgunder).

His jewel of a cellar is just off the "Wine Road" that runs through the important villages south of Bolzano, and his vineyards are mostly clustered around his cellar. These are ultra-clean, mineral-driven wines with inviting weight and texture from a rarely seen but highly sought after winemaker.

Pinot Noir thrives in the high-altitude vineyards of Alto Adige. The fruit is finely honed and perfumed with dry crushed flower petals, incense, and mountain herbs. Although Pinot Noir from the Alto Adige is grown in small amounts and is not yet well-known, Alto Adige produces the best wines from this grape which are unmatched anywhere else in Italy. The wine shows just how good Italian Pinot Noir can be.
