Description

Both Chinon and Bourgueil are based on Cabernet Franc and are classic partners to Parisian Bistro faire. They're also both producing seriously profound wine with filigreed aromatics and precise mineral expression.

It can be difficult to distinguish between Bourgueil and Chinon in a blind tasting (I'm right about 50% of the time). My record is much better on guessing the soil on which the wine was grown. Both Chinon and Bourgueil share three distinct soils: sand, gravel and argile-calcaire (clay mixed with limestone), each giving Cabernet Franc its own unique identity.

In the case of the 2010 C et P Breton Bourgueil Franc de Pied, gravelly soils give a smoky, floral fragrance and hard mineral finish. This is forward with deep color and rich black fruit. From un-grafted vines this was bio-dynamically farmed by two of the Loire's most celebrated growers, theCatherine and Pierre Breton. Vinification is traditional and the élevage is in old wood.
