Georges Vernay, now retired, was one of the holdouts while Condrieu teetered on the verge of extinction during the 1960s and 70s. His wines rose in reputation to be the best in the village during the 1980s. Vernay's daughter, Christine, took over the domaine in 1997 and the wines have never been better.

Today, Domaine Vernay is viewed as one of the top handful producers in Condrieu. Their 7.5 hectares of vineyards enjoy fabulous exposures and the convex arc of the hill that traps the sun. The soil is the classic mica-filled granite with some schist.

Terrasses de l'Empire is the classic wine of the Vernay estate, a wine from mainly the lieu-dit Ste-Agathe. The average vine age is 40 years. The wine is fermented and raised in 20hl barrels and is packed with aromas and flavors of nuts, dried peaches, and honeysuckle. The time in barrel gives this wine added texture.
