Description

Karthäuserhof is an ancient estate with Roman origins. The property was donated to an order of Carthusian monks (Karthäuserhofberg means "Carthusian's hill") in the 14th Century. The Tyrell family purchased the property in 1951.

Christoph Tyrell, the current owner, took over in 1986 and cares for the 19 hectares that make up the Karthäuserhofberg vineyard. It is an amalgamation of five original vineyards (Burgberg, Kronenberg, Orthsberg, Sang, and Stirn). The Tyrells brought these vineyards together as one in the 1980s and have labeled their wines simply Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhofberger ever since.

Riesling at Karthäuserhof is planted on Devonian slate at a gradient of 55%. Tyrell uses no pesticides and the fruit is harvested by hand and fermentation is in stainless steel. This is quite simply one of our favorite Riesling Kabinetts, year in and year out. It's a classic Mosel wine with true Kabinett balance of sweetness, acidity, and minerality. Highly recommended.
