The 2010 Schäfer-Fröhlich’s Bockenauer Riesling Kabinett stopped us in our tracks with its drop-dead gorgeous aroma of peach blossoms, lemongrass ginger, and orange oil. But it’s not the aroma and flavor of a Fröhlich wine that makes them stand out—it’s the electrical charge we get from drinking them, bringing words such as “energy,” “thrust,” and “kinetic” to our tasting notes.

Chiseled minerality is another theme, as well as finely honed acid cores with balance that seems masterful. Rudi Wiest, Fröhlich’s American importer, told us that Tim Fröhlich, at the age of 21, woke up one morning and simply explained to his parents that was going to take over the family business.

Since then, the wines of Schäfer-Fröhlich have made such remarkable strides that we often shake our heads in disbelief, only to see the quality improve the following year. Schäfer-Fröhlich belongs in the company of Germany’s wine elite.
