Friuli's famous quality wine zones of Collio and Colli Orientalli del Friuli, or "COF," give wines of stony minerality and Alpine aromatics of pine, balsam, and mountain herbs. As one drives towards the sea and into the flatter alluvial plain of the Isonzo zone, one can't help but notice that wines begin to show sea salt and brine.

The Tenuta di Angoris winery is located inside the Isonzo zone where they farm 70 hectares of densely planted vines. The Isonzo wines are bottled under the name Villa Locatelli to differentiate them from their more powerful (and more expensive) Collio and COF wines.

Merlot is the most-planted red grape in Friuli, but Refosco is probably the most adored locally. It shows ripe and juicy blackberry fruit, with tobacco, cola, and roasted coffee aromas. This wine was aged with a combination of large tonneau and small used barriques. Pair with salumi or braised pork over polenta.
