The Côte de Beaune is the southern half of Burgundy’s famed Côte d’Or. Montrachet might be the acme of Chardonnay, but some growers in Meursault achieve Grand Cru results, without a single Grand Cru vineyard in their arsenal. The Côte de Beaune also manages to produce lovely red wines that are entirely unique from those of the Côte de Nuits. The hill of Corton is capable of producing both red and white wines of spectacular power while the villages below give more cheerful examples. And terroir skeptics need look no further than neighbors Volnay and Pommard for their wines are worlds apart.
